Intermediate/Senior – Civil Structural Engineer

TWD is currently seeking an Intermediate/Senior - Civil Structural Engineer in our Pittsburgh, PA office. 

Position Overview:
As a Civil / Structural Engineer in our Pittsburgh office, you will provide engineering design, analysis, and technical support for projects within the energy and infrastructure sectors. You will work as part of multidisciplinary project teams to develop practical, code-compliant civil and structural solutions for facilities and infrastructure, with responsibilities ranging from technical design and analysis to project coordination, client interaction, and technical leadership. Depending on experience level, you may also lead technical work, mentor junior engineers, and support project execution and business development activities.

Key Responsibilities
Civil & Structural Engineering

  • Perform and oversee civil and structural engineering design and analysis for energy and infrastructure projects.
  • Develop and review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, technical reports, and design documentation.
  • Design and evaluate structural systems, foundations, steel and concrete structures, equipment supports, and related infrastructure as applicable to project requirements.
  • Perform civil engineering design activities related to site development, grading, drainage, foundations, utilities, and related infrastructure as applicable.
  • Apply applicable building codes, design standards, regulations, and client requirements to engineering work.
  • Evaluate existing structures and infrastructure and provide recommendations for repair, modification, reinforcement, or replacement as required.
  • Review engineering work and deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
Project & Multidisciplinary Coordination
  • Coordinate civil and structural engineering activities with mechanical, electrical, process, controls, environmental, and other project disciplines.
  • Support or lead development of project scopes, schedules, estimates, and technical deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, and technical discussions.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, fabricators, surveyors, geotechnical consultants, and other third parties.
  • Provide technical input to resolve design, construction, and field-related issues.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and field activities, including site visits and engineering assessments as required.
Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a technical resource for project teams and provide guidance on civil and structural engineering matters.
  • Lead or oversee technical tasks and deliverables for assigned projects based on experience level.
  • Review work prepared by less-experienced engineers and provide technical direction and mentoring.
  • Establish appropriate design approaches, methodologies, and engineering criteria for assigned work.
  • Promote consistent application of engineering standards, quality processes, and best practices.
Client & Business Development
  • Communicate technical information and project requirements effectively with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and project reviews.
  • Support preparation of proposals, scopes of work, engineering estimates, and technical qualifications.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project delivery and support development of long-term client relationships.
  • Contribute to business development activities and pursuit of new project opportunities as appropriate.
  • Quality & Professional Development
  • Maintain technical quality and consistency across engineering deliverables.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control reviews.
  • Stay current with applicable codes, standards, engineering practices, and industry developments.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering methods, tools, and project delivery processes.
  • Maintain professional credentials and pursue ongoing technical and professional development.
Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Intermediate level: 4–9 years of relevant civil and/or structural engineering experience.
  • Senior level: 10+ years of relevant civil and/or structural engineering experience.
  • Experience in the energy, power, utilities, industrial, infrastructure, or related sectors is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required or strongly preferred, depending on role and project responsibilities.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary engineering projects and coordination is preferred.
Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of civil and structural engineering principles, design practices, applicable codes, and industry standards.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, foundations, and other structural systems as applicable.
  • Experience with civil design activities such as site development, grading, drainage, utilities, and related infrastructure is preferred.
  • Ability to prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with common civil/structural engineering, modeling, drafting, and analysis software and tools.
  • Ability to interpret architectural, civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, and other technical documentation.
  • Understanding of construction methods, constructability considerations, and field conditions.

  • Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as required.
